The Idea Behind the Ring
The idea behind the ring was simple but powerful: to capture the face of his mother in gold.
Rather than creating a traditional engraved ring, the design focused on a detailed sculpted portrait, transforming the piece into a permanent tribute and a future family heirloom.
The ring was inspired by a photograph that Giannitsakis has kept close to him for many years—an image of his mother before she met his father and before her life changed.
That photograph became the foundation of the design.
The Story Behind the Design
Theodoros Giannitsakis shares the personal story behind the ring:
“I was born in Paris to Greek immigrant parents who raised me between two cultures within one city.
In the neighborhood where I grew up, everyone was an immigrant. There were nationalities from all over the world.
When we played outside, I realized that we all had the same story and that many elements of our cultures were very similar—especially with North Africa and Turkey.
But inside the house, my life was only Greece. There was no French element. My parents were afraid of losing it, so everything revolved around our Greek identity.”
He also recalls receiving his grandfather’s ring when he turned eighteen.
“When I turned 18, my parents gave me my grandfather’s ring.
I wondered why these family rings don’t really exist anymore.
All my friends have some kind of family heirloom.
And at some point I thought: what will I give to my children or my grandchildren?”
The answer became this ring.
“All the inspiration came from a photograph that I’ve kept close to me for many years — the last photo of my mother before she met my father.
My mother is perhaps the most important influence on my aesthetics and on my personality.
She represents what I am today.”
